“I want to get good at chess”
A strong player sees a chess position as a few familiar patterns: a pawn structure, a castled king, a tactic waiting to happen. Each move, they read the position (material, pawns, king safety, piece activity), choose a plan that fits it, then calculate the forcing lines to check that the move is safe. The game has three phases: an opening that players often prepare at home, a middlegame of plans and tactics, and an endgame of exact technique. A clock limits the thinking time. Players improve by playing, going over their games, and studying master games and puzzles until the patterns are recognised at a glance.

Game of chess
You might say: a chess game, a game in progress
Two players move 16 pieces each on an 8×8 board, one move at a time, against a clock. The aim is to checkmate the other king.
- Ask
- Who stands better here, why, and what should happen next?
What to look for
- 8×8 board with 16 pieces per side
- Moves played against a clock
- Scoresheet recording every move
Parts
- Rules: The rules are the legal and competitive framework for chess: how pieces move, how games end, and how a clock is used in over-the-board play.
- Opening: The opening is the first phase of a chess game, from the first move until the game makes a subjective transition into the middlegame.
- Position: The board snapshot a player evaluates for immediate threats and lasting advantages.
- Middlegame: The phase after the opening and before the endgame, where strategic and tactical decisions usually decide the game.
- Tactics: Tactics are short, concrete sequences in which a forcing idea changes the material, king safety, or result.
- Calculation: Calculation is the disciplined search through candidate moves and the opponent's replies until the position becomes quiet enough to evaluate.
- Endgame: The endgame is the phase where reduced material makes king routes, pawn races, and exact positions decisive.
- Chess clock: A chess clock is two linked time displays, only one of which runs at a time; after moving, a player presses it to complete the move and start the opponent's clock.
- Improvement: Improvement is a feedback practice: name the recurring position or decision, study it actively, test the idea in play, and review what happened.
Catalogue: Setting
- Over the board: A physical board and pieces, a chess clock and a scoresheet on which both players write every move.
- Online: The same game on a screen. The app shows the clocks and records the moves.
