Theoretical position
You might say: known endgame position, table position
A theoretical position is a reduced-material arrangement whose result or method is known from endgame theory, such as a king-and-pawn key-square position, a basic rook ending, or a standard mating finish. It is a pattern to verify and understand, not a shortcut around legal calculation.
- What it does
- Supplies a tested reference point for deciding whether to simplify, seek a win, hold a draw, or calculate a race exactly.
- Ask
- Does this position match a known win, draw, or loss, and what is the human plan behind the verdict?
- Trouble
- A remembered rule is applied to a changed move order, pawn file, king square, or 50-move context.
What to look for
- Reduced-material arrangement
- King-and-pawn key-square position
- Basic rook ending
- Standard mating finish

What if you realized that in the majority of the endgames you play, the result is likely already decided or forced if the best moves are played by both sides?
