Process
King activity
You might say: active king, king route
King activity is the deliberate use of the king as an endgame piece: approach pawns, occupy key squares, support a passer, or cut off the enemy king. The king should remain safe while the position still contains tactical mating or checking danger.
- What it does
- Converts king proximity and tempo into opposition, pawn support, blockade, or promotion gains.
- Ask
- When is the king safe to activate, and which route reaches the decisive square first?
- Trouble
- The king enters too late, or walks into checks and tactics before the position is ready.
What to look for
- King approaching pawns
- King on a key square
- King supporting a passer
- Enemy king cut off
