Time management
You might say: allocating thinking time, clock discipline
Time management allocates the clock unevenly: spend longer when a position is critical and move efficiently when it is routine.
- What it does
- Balances speed against accuracy so the player can keep making legal, useful decisions through the later phases of the game.
- Ask
- Has the position become critical enough to spend time, or is a safe routine move available?
What to look for
- Longer think in a critical position
- Efficient move in a routine position
- Clock budget carried into later phases

In general, you should only spend 15 seconds or more on a particular move when you believe that a critical position has been reached.

But time management is an art itself.
