Concept
Initiative
You might say: dynamic advantage, calling the shots
The temporary dynamic advantage of making threats that require answers; it is broader than a direct king attack.
- What it does
- Buys time for an attack or for conversion into a lasting advantage, but can vanish when the opponent consolidates.
- Ask
- Who is making the threats now, and what lasting advantage appears if the pressure is answered?
- Typical
- Temporary or converted; attacking or positional; dynamic against static advantages.
- Trouble
- The attacker makes a slow move, the opponent gets a free move, and the initiative disappears while a material or structural plus remains.
Connections
- Raises: Plan
- Raises: King attack

An initiative isn’t necessarily an attack. It just means that you are calling the shots and your opponent has to respond.
