Concept
Space
You might say: space advantage, room to maneuver
The useful territory behind a player's pawns where pieces can move and maneuver.
- What it does
- Gives its owner more freedom and can restrict the opponent's pieces, while creating a duty to avoid being undermined by breaks.
- Ask
- Who has more useful room, and can the cramped side challenge it before the space becomes permanent?
- Typical
- More or less space; central, kingside, or queenside space; flexible or overextended.
- Trouble
- A cramped army cannot maneuver, or advanced pawns become targets and the space advantage collapses.
