Process
Edit
You might say: editing, post-production, cutting
Turning raw takes into the finished video in an editor (NLE): selecting, cutting, layering graphics, captions and sound, grading, and exporting.
- What it does
- Sets the final pace and clarity, and removes everything the viewer does not need.
- Ask
- What can I cut without losing the story?
- Trouble
- The video is longer than its content, or the viewer can see the seams.
What to look for
- Cuts, graphics, captions and sound layered over takes
- Final pace with no visible seams
Parts
- Rough cut: Editing in passes: assemble all the usable takes in order, cut to a rough version, refine to a fine cut, then lock the picture before sound and colour.
- Jump cut: Cuts inside one continuous shot that remove pauses, mistakes and filler, so the subject seems to jump slightly.
- Pacing: How fast the video moves: how long each shot lasts and how quickly new information arrives.
- Pattern interrupt: A change on screen that resets attention: a zoom, a new angle, B-roll, a graphic or a sound.
- Captions: The spoken words as text.
- Motion graphics: Moving text, arrows, diagrams and zooms laid over the footage.
- Colour grade: First correction (fix exposure and white balance so shots match), then grading (a chosen look).
- Export settings: The file format the editor writes: container, codec, frame size, frame rate, bitrate and audio.
- Master file: The finished, exported video file, plus a version for each platform’s shape and length.
