Pacing
You might say: cut rhythm, shot length, pace
How fast the video moves: how long each shot lasts and how quickly new information arrives. In a study of 160 Hollywood films, average shot length fell from about 10 seconds in the 1930s–40s to under 4 seconds after 2000. That is history, not a target for a Short.
- What it does
- Matches speed to the content: fast enough to hold, slow enough to follow.
- Ask
- Where does it drag, and where is it too fast to follow?
- Trouble
- Retention dips in a slow stretch; or viewers rewatch because they missed a point.
What to look for
- Shot lengths changing
- New information arriving quickly or slowly
- Retention dips in a slow stretch
