Part
Map
You might say: world map, galaxy map, the board
The playing field: tiles, regions or star systems, each with terrain and resources, mostly hidden at the start.
- What it does
- Gives exploration its payoff and makes each empire's position different.
- Ask
- Does this map give each player different, readable choices about where to go?
What to look for
- Tiles with terrain colours and resource icons
- Black or greyed fog beyond the explored area
Parts
- Tile grid: How the map is cut into spaces where units stand and cities work land.
- Procedural map generation: A map template generates a different world each game from a chosen type.
- Map size: How many tiles or systems the map holds, usually set with the number of players.
- Fog of war: The parts of the map a player has never seen, and the parts no unit of theirs can see now.
- Start position balance: How much useful food, production, commerce and resources a player's starting site offers, plus its position near friends and enemies.
- Exploration rewards: Sites on the map that give a reward to whoever reaches them first: gold, a map, a unit, a technology.

The Main Map displays all of your “Known World” – therein you can see your cities, terrain, improvements, resources and units, and all neutral/foreign lands that are “visible” to you.
