Part
Expansion
You might say: settling, land grab, colonising
Founding new cities or colonies to claim land.
- What it does
- Turns land into production, research and income: the start of the empire's growth engine.
- Ask
- Where is the next city, and what does founding it cost the empire?
What to look for
- Settler or colony units moving out
- Borders spreading across the map
Parts
- Settler: A unit that founds a new city or colony where it stops.
- City site selection: Choosing where to found a city: the tiles it will work, fresh water, coast, resources and the distance to other cities.
- Territory and borders: The land an empire owns, marked by a coloured border that grows out from its cities.
- Expansion brake: A cost that grows with the number or spread of cities: upkeep, unhappiness or an empire-size penalty.
- Tall versus wide: Two ways to build an empire: a few large, developed cities (tall) or many cities (wide).
- Empire size loop: More cities raise the expansion brake's cost, which cuts the surplus that pays for the next settler.
