Sound effects
You might say: SFX, whooshes, pops, transition sounds
Short sounds placed against the picture: a whoosh on a move, a pop when a card appears, a riser before a reveal, a hit on a title. Each has a role, a frame it lands on and a source.
- What it does
- Makes edits feel deliberate and marks changes for viewers who glance away.
- Ask
- Does this sound mark something, or is it noise?
- Trouble
- Effects on every cut until nothing stands out, or a big trailer sound on a small moment.
What to look for
- A pop when a card appears
- A riser before a reveal
- A hit on a title card
Parts
- Effect type: The role a sound plays in the edit: movement, a build, an impact, an accent, or a bed under the scene.
- Sync point: The frame where the key moment of an effect lands: the peak of a whoosh, the end of a riser, the strike of a hit, set against the cut or the action.
- Layering: Building one effect from several sounds, each doing one job: a sharp attack, a body that gives weight, a low sweetener or a tail.
- Effect source: Where an effect comes from: a licensed library, a free library, your own recording, a synthesiser or an AI generator.
- Sonic signature: A short sound, or a small palette of sounds, reused so the audience knows who it is before they see a name.

Any audio element in a scene that is not dialogue or music: a door, an impact, weather, a UI beep. Effects fill in the events and world of a scene, and they can be recorded, performed, or generated from a description.

Any track that doesn't achieve one of these goals is unnecessary clutter that can potentially distract from the message.
