Effect type
You might say: whoosh, riser, hit, braam, kinds of sound effect
The role a sound plays in the edit: movement, a build, an impact, an accent, or a bed under the scene. The role is separate from where the file came from.
- What it does
- Lets you search for, brief and place the sound the picture needs.
- Ask
- What job must this sound do here?
- Trouble
- A role that does not fit the moment, such as a trailer braam on a small cut.
What to look for
- A sweep of air on a transition
- A rising sound before a reveal
- One short strike on a title
Catalogue: Type
- Whoosh: A sweep of air or motion with a soft start, mostly for transitions and things that move.
- Riser: A sound that climbs in pitch, volume or intensity to a peak, building tension before a cut, a drop or a reveal.
- Hit (impact): A short, strong single sound that marks a moment of force or emphasis, such as a title card striking the screen.
- Stinger: A brief, sharp musical accent that punctuates a reveal, a scare or a logo.
- Braam: A big, brassy cinematic hit that tells the audience something epic is coming: the standard trailer sound.
- Pop or click: A small interface sound that confirms something changed, such as a card appearing. Its job is feedback that does not jump out.
- Foley: Everyday sounds performed live in sync with the picture: footsteps, cloth, handling props.
- Drone (bed): A continuous, textured sound that holds a mood or a place while shorter sounds come and go on top.

Separate the role from the source. A hit can be recorded, performed as foley, or generated. The role is what the scene needs; the method is how you get it.
