Process
Layering
You might say: stacking sounds, sweetener, building a sound
Building one effect from several sounds, each doing one job: a sharp attack, a body that gives weight, a low sweetener or a tail. Each layer sits in its own frequency range.
- What it does
- Makes one effect bigger and more specific than any single recording.
- Ask
- What does each layer add?
- Typical
- Past 3 to 5 files for one sound, mute each layer in turn and listen.
- Trouble
- Layers in the same frequency range that mask each other and turn to mud.
What to look for
- A sharp click at the start of a hit
- A low thump under a whoosh

Individual sound effects are often made up of several layers, such as the smack of a punch accompanied by a beefy impact and the rustle of clothing.

To avoid frequency masking and clashing, try using unique sound layers that are focused in different frequency ranges.

When you find yourself using more than 3-5 audio files to create one sound, stop and listen critically while muting each layer one by one.
- Morphic, Sound effects glossary: common terms explained, Core terms: Sweetener
Sweetener. An extra sound layered onto an existing element to enrich it without being noticed on its own. A gunshot might get a low sub-layer and a metallic tail as sweeteners, so the whole reads bigger and more specific than any single recording.

There’s a bass element (sometimes called a 'sweetener'), which gives the explosion some 'ooomph' at the low end.
