Concept
Ludonarrative dissonance
You might say: story–mechanics mismatch, ludo-narrative conflict
Ludonarrative dissonance is a conflict between the story a game tells and the actions, incentives or values its mechanics require.
- What it does
- Flags when narrative promises and play teach incompatible meanings, weakening trust and emotional alignment.
- Ask
- What is the player doing and being rewarded for, and does the fiction say that action means something else?
- Typical
- A small continuity mismatch to a systemic contradiction; passive (irrelevant rules) or active (conflicting rules).
- Trouble
- Players call the protagonist out of character, treat the story as disposable, or optimize a behavior the fiction condemns.
