Measure
Pacing
You might say: level rhythm, beat sequence
Pacing is the order and rhythm of activities and events the player experiences across a level.
- What it does
- Alternates intensity, information and rest so the player's attention and learning rise and recover at useful times.
- Ask
- Why does this activity happen before that one, and when does the player get to breathe?
- Typical
- Beat sheet, flowchart or intensity graph; teach–test–twist; high/low intensity; authored, systemic or zone-based.
- Trouble
- The level is a monotone slog, confusion arrives before teaching, or maximum intensity never lets players recover.
