Part
Software stack
You might say: ROS, the code
The software stack is the set of programs, middleware, robot models and tools that connect sensing, estimation, planning and control.
- What it does
- It integrates the robot into a runnable system and supports simulation, replay and debugging.
- Ask
- Can the system be replayed, simulated and debugged from the same interfaces?
Parts
- Middleware: Middleware lets independent programs exchange typed messages and invoke services or actions over named interfaces.
- Robot description (URDF): A robot description names links and joints and gives their visual, collision and inertial properties; URDF also carries joint dynamics and limits where defined.
- Sense–plan–act loop: The conventional autonomy cycle senses the world, estimates or perceives state, plans an action, commands actuators and senses the result.
- Simulation: A simulator advances a virtual robot and environment with a physics model, sensors and the robot's software interfaces.
- Field testing: Field testing runs the robot on real tasks in the real setting while logging outcomes, interventions and failures.
- Logging and replay: Logging records timestamped messages and other state so a run can be inspected or replayed after the robot stops.
- Development cycle: The development cycle changes software, tests it in simulation, runs a hardware shakeout, deploys, logs failures and feeds the evidence into the next change.

ROS systems consist of numerous small computer programs that connect to one another and continuously exchange messages.
