Part
Safety
You might say: functional safety
Robot safety combines hazard analysis, protective measures, safety-related control, and validated safety functions.
- What it does
- Determines where and near whom the robot may operate and how hazards are reduced.
- Ask
- What is the worst credible harm, and which independent safety measure prevents it?
What to look for
- Hazard and protective measure
- Safety-related control
- Validated safety function
- Robot operation near a person
Parts
- Risk assessment: Risk assessment identifies hazards and tasks, estimates risk, applies risk-reduction measures, and records residual risk.
- Emergency stop: An emergency-stop device requests a safety stop through the safety-related control system; it is a complementary protective measure, not routine shutdown.
- Collaborative operation: Collaborative operation is a deliberately designed state in which a robot and a person can work in a shared workspace.
- Performance level (PL): Performance Level (PL) is a discrete reliability level for a safety-related control function, from PL a to PL e.
