Process
Perception
You might say: computer vision, seeing
A software pipeline that turns sensor measurements such as images and depth into scene structure, objects, and poses.
- What it does
- Supplies state estimation and planning with observations rather than certainty.
- Ask
- What scenes, lighting, latency, and failure cases were tested?
What to look for
- Images or depth becoming scene structure
- Objects and poses in the output
- Observations passed to estimation and planning
Parts
- Object detection and segmentation: An image model predicts object classes and locations; segmentation predicts the pixels belonging to each object.
- Object pose estimation: 6D pose estimation finds an object's 3D position and orientation from image or depth data, often using a known object model.
- Point cloud processing: Point-cloud processing filters, downsamples, segments, and registers 3D points into a common frame.

Perception, which is defined here to be task-oriented interpretation of sensor data, allows the integration of sensor information across space and time to facilitate planning.
