Concept
Significant detail
You might say: concrete detail, telling detail
A concrete detail appeals to the senses. Burroway: it becomes significant when it also suggests an idea or a judgement.
- What it does
- Lets readers infer the meaning themselves, so it sticks.
- Ask
- What one detail shows what this room, or this person, is really like?
- Trouble
- Lists of generic details: “a nice room with a table and chairs”.
What to look for
- A concrete detail that appeals to the senses
- A detail suggesting an idea or judgement
- One telling detail for a room or person
