Publishing path
You might say: getting published, traditional vs self-publishing
How the manuscript becomes a book in readers’ hands. Friedman’s chart splits the paths by who pays and who controls the rights.
- What it does
- Decides the money, control and reach of the finished book.
- Ask
- Who pays, who keeps the rights, and how does the book reach readers?
- Trouble
- Paying for a contract with no clear way to readers.
Catalogue: Path
- Traditional: Usually through an agent. The publisher pays to produce and distribute the book and pays an advance and royalties; you give up some control.
- Self-publishing: You are the publisher: you pay the costs, hire the help, and keep the rights and control.
- Hybrid: The publisher’s name goes on the book, but you pay for publication. Packages and costs vary widely.

This chart’s logic is driven primarily by how the money works and how and where the work is sold.
