Hook type
You might say: opening line, kind of hook
Interchangeable ways to open: a question, a bold claim, the result first, the stakes, the middle of the action, or a striking image.
- What it does
- Picks the fastest route from the package’s promise to the viewer’s reason to stay.
- Ask
- Which opening matches this package and this viewer?
- Trouble
- Every video opens the same way, or the hook promises something the video does not deliver.
What to look for
- A question, bold claim or result first
- Stakes or challenge in the opening
- Middle of the action or a striking image
Catalogue: Hook type
- Question: A specific question the viewer can answer only by watching: a test, a mystery or a prediction.
- Bold claim: A surprising, defensible claim that gives the viewer a reason to check it.
- Result first: Show the finished result first, then make “how?” the question.
- Stakes or challenge: State the risk, limit or prize, so the viewer can follow the progress.
- In the action (in medias res): Start inside the action, before the explanation or backstory.
- Visual hook: A striking image or action that says the premise before any words. Jenny Hoyos: it must work without sound.
