Hook stack
You might say: hook stacking, layered hook, spoken, text and visual hook, lock-in zone
What the opening piles up so the right viewer stays. Creators use the name for two stacks: the layers the viewer sees, reads and hears in the first two or three seconds, plus a follow-up line; or the parts packed into the first sentence itself: who it is for, the result, a number, what they get and the pain it avoids.
- What it does
- Qualifies the viewer and makes the promise concrete before they can scroll, then holds them past the first line.
- Ask
- Does the first line say who it is for and what they get, and do the image, the on-screen text and the voice say the same thing?
- Trouble
- The opening never moves beyond the hook, so it fails to hold attention and the viewer skips.
What to look for
- Large on-screen text in the first frame, apart from the captions
- A first spoken line about what the image shows
- A second line that adds proof, a contrast or an unexplained name
Catalogue: Layer
- Visual hook: A visual hook that viewers can understand without listening.
- Text hook: The on-screen text layer of the hook.
- Spoken hook: The first sentence said aloud.
- Audio hook: A sound, music cue or sound effect that marks the first moment.
- Lock-in line: The one to three sentences that come directly after the hook.
Catalogue: Line
- Callout: Says exactly who the video is for, specific enough that the right viewer recognises themselves.
- Objective: The end result the viewer wants, rather than the topic.
- Specific number: A count, score or range that makes the promise concrete.
- Value indicator: Names the tangible thing the viewer will get, such as a checklist, a system or a blueprint.
- With or without: The cost, effort or wait the viewer avoids, or the time it takes.

The hook is the first sentence you say and the two to three seconds that you show on screen visually. You've got the spoken hook, the text hook, the visual hook.
- Kallaway – The ‘Invisible’ Hook That Makes Your Videos Impossible to Skip (YouTube, transcript on Modern Creator), 09:47
this hook stacking is the difference between a creator who can hold attention for 50 seconds and someone whose skip rate is super high.

A good hook will not rescue a bad piece of content, because a hook is a promise the rest of the video has to live up to.
